"NEPAL’S TREKKING TOURISM IS ON THE VERGE OF GROWTH- YATRA MAGAZINE, MARCH 2024" Special Edition ITB Berlin
Tourism stands as Nepal’s economic backbone, driven by its natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. The commendable efforts of private sectors in ensuring tourist safety deserve acknowledgment.

Subas Bhandari
Managing Director
Annapurna Encounter Pvt. Ltd.

Subas Bhandari, the Managing Director of Annapurna Encounter Pvt. Ltd., has held his esteemed position for a decade, showcasing his extensive experience and commitment to the company. Alongside his dedicated leadership, he also proudly serves as a member of the Trekking Agency Association of Nepal (TAAN). An essential collaborator in this venture is Bijaya Khatiwada, contributing to the success and growth of Annapurna Encounter since its establishment in 2014. The company has made significant strides, marking its presence by participating in prestigious events such as the International Tourism Bourse (ITB) for the first time, further solidifying its reputation in the adventure and trekking industry.

How can you take advantage from ITB Berlin?

Participating in ITB Berlin not only provides personal advantages but also contributes significantly to the overall welfare of the country. As the Managing Director of Annapurna Encounter, your presence at such a global platform enhances the company’s visibility and credibility. Building personal connections with agents and clients fosters trust, potentially leading to increased business opportunities. This not only benefits your company but also has a ripple effect on the national economy by creating more employment opportunities. The direct impact of securing 100 businesses from such engagements can be a catalyst for economic growth and prosperity, making the effort invested in attending ITB Berlin a strategic and fruitful endeavor.

What is your focus destination on trekking?

Absolutely, the focus on trekking destinations spans across the entire spectrum, from the lowest peaks to the towering giants above 8000 meters. Recognizing the significance of all eight of these majestic peaks is vital, as each offers a unique and awe-inspiring adventure. By opening up every peak to tourists, we not only attract a diverse range of visitors but also create opportunities for repeat experiences. Climbers, driven by the spirit of adventure, often seek new challenges and our country’s diverse topography provides the perfect canvas for such mountaineering aspirations.
The potential for welcoming climbers repeatedly not only adds to the thrill of exploration but also contributes to the sustained growth of trekking tourism in our region.

Back then tourists could come in and go for trekking themselves, however right now government imposed permits. Is it advantageous to your sector?

The introduction of permits, while potentially adding a layer of complexity for tourists, proves to be advantageous not just for our sector but also for the overall well-being of the country. The requirement for permits aligns with responsible tourism practices, ensuring a more organized and regulated trekking experience.
Beyond the immediate benefits to our sector, which sees increased demand for guiding services, it has a broader positive impact on the nation. Mandating permits creates employment opportunities for local guides and support staff, contributing to the prevention of youth migration. This not only safeguards our natural treasures but also supports the livelihoods of the citizens, reinforcing the symbiotic relationship between responsible tourism and national development.

Tourism is known as the main pillar of economy of Nepal, what is your perspective on that?

Tourism stands as Nepal’s economic backbone, driven by its natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. While suggesting VATs and taxes for government support is reasonable, the commendable efforts of private sectors in ensuring tourist safety deserve acknowledgment. In the absence of significant government backing, it becomes crucial not to impose additional challenges on tourism organizations.
A collaborative effort between the government and private sectors is essential to streamline processes and create a conducive environment for tourism, securing sustained economic benefits for Nepal.

How safe is our country for tourists?

Nepal has made significant strides in ensuring the safety of tourists, making it a secure destination for individuals.
The country has witnessed considerable improvements over time, fostering an environment that prioritizes the well-being of visitors. The warmth and welcoming nature of the people further contribute to the sense of security, making tourists feel at home. This positive atmosphere not only enhances the overall experience but also plays a crucial role in attracting repeat visits, solidifying Nepal’s reputation as a safe and inviting destination.
