TRIP FACTS
The Rolwaling Valley Trek, located in eastern Nepal, is a hidden gem nestled near the popular Everest trekking routes. This journey offers an opportunity to immerse yourself in the untouched beauty of the region, with awe-inspiring mountain views, diverse flora and fauna, and a vibrant local culture. It's a trek into one of Nepal's pristine high mountain valleys, situated west of Khumbu, near the Tibetan border.
This remote valley, locally referred to as "the grave" due to its location surrounded by towering ice-covered peaks, is a rare find for trekkers seeking solitude and an authentic connection with nature. Along the way, you'll encounter charming Sherpa, Tamang, and Chhetri villages with terraced fields, traverse ancient forests, and cross picturesque bridges with breathtaking views.
The Rolwaling region, located to the west of Everest and near the Tibetan border, promises a captivating adventure starting in Barabise. You'll trek over Tinsang La pass, descend to Bigu Gomba, home to Buddhist nuns, and follow the Bhote Kosi River's course into the enchanting Rolwaling Valley. This valley is steeped in mystery, with tales of the elusive yeti, adding to its allure. In the past, some mountaineers even organized expeditions in search of these mythical creatures in the area.
Beding serves as the last permanent settlement on your route, while Na Gaun functions as a summer settlement and marks the trek's highest point. From Na village (4,183m), you'll ascend through a grassy valley to reach Tso Rolpa and then cross the moraine on the valley's north side, leading to the snout of the Tram Bau Glacier, which feeds the Rolwaling River.
The trek also provides an opportunity to explore Pachhermo Peak (6,273m), although the route is challenging due to crevasses. Along the way, you'll relish views of impressive mountains like Gaurishankar (7,145m) and Melungtse (7,181m), as well as captivating landscapes. The village of Beding (3,690m) with its monastery, the village of Na (4,183m), and the tranquil Tso Rolpa Lake stand out as some of the key highlights of the Rolwaling trek.
