Overview And Highlights
Mount Kailash stands at 6,638 m (21,778 ft) in the far west of the Tibetan Plateau — a perfect pyramid of black rock and ice that has drawn pilgrims for over 2,000 years. Hindus revere it as the throne of Lord Shiva. Buddhists call it the abode of Chakrasamvara. Jains identify it as Mount Ashtapada, where their first Tirthankara attained liberation. Bön practitioners regard it as the seat of all spiritual power. For four of the world's great religions, this is the holiest mountain on Earth — and unlike Everest, it has never been climbed. Its sanctity remains absolute and intact.
The 10-Day Mt. Kailash Tour from Kathmandu is a complete drive-in, drive-out pilgrimage expedition designed for small groups with guaranteed fixed departures. From the ancient streets of Kathmandu, you cross the Nepal–Tibet border at Kyirung (Gyirong), traverse the high-altitude Tibetan Plateau past turquoise lakes and nomad settlements, and arrive at the shores of sacred Lake Manasarovar before completing the legendary 52 km Kailash Kora over three days.
This is not a sightseeing tour. It is a journey of transformation — across desert plateaus at 4,600 m, over the sacred Dolma La Pass at 5,630 m, and around the mountain that over a billion people consider the spiritual center of the universe. Whether you travel as a devout pilgrim or a spiritual seeker, the Kailash Kora leaves no one unchanged.

Best Season to Visit
May to June ✔ (Recommended) — Clear pre-monsoon weather, roads fully open. Possibility to witness the sacred Saga Dawa Festival. Completing the Kora during Saga Dawa is traditionally believed to multiply its spiritual merit 13-fold.
September to October ✔ (Recommended) — Post-monsoon clarity. The plateau is dry, skies exceptionally clear, and mountain views are at their finest. Cool temperatures with excellent visibility.
July to August ⚠ (Possible, Higher Risk) — Monsoon season in Nepal complicates road access via Kyirung. The Tibetan plateau stays relatively dry but Nepal-side conditions can cause delays.
November to April ✗ (Not Recommended) — Bitterly cold (−30°C possible). Kyirung road can be snowbound. Tibet does not operate group tours in winter months.
Difficulty & Fitness Level
Overall Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging
This tour is not a technical mountaineering expedition, but extreme altitude makes it significantly more demanding than the physical effort alone suggests. Most of the tour is spent above 4,500 m, where blood oxygen saturation drops to roughly 50–60% of sea-level normal. A peer-reviewed study published on PubMed (NCBI) found that Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) affects approximately 51% of trekkers at 4,500–5,000 m — exactly the altitude band where you spend most of your time. Proper acclimatization on Day 2 and a measured pace on the Kora are the safety foundation of this itinerary.
You should be able to walk 15–18 km/day on uneven terrain and carry a 6–8 kg daypack. No prior trekking experience is required, but 4–6 weeks of regular cardiovascular preparation (hiking, swimming, cycling) significantly improves comfort and safety. Travelers over 60 should provide a recent medical clearance. Those with unmanaged heart conditions, lung conditions, or high blood pressure should consult their physician before booking.
Important Notices
⚠ Tibet Permit & Border Status
Tibet periodically restricts foreign tourist entry, most commonly around March. Permit availability can change without advance notice. If Tibet is officially closed and permits cannot be obtained, Annapurna Encounter issues a full refund. We do not retain deposits for government-caused closures.
⚠ India-Origin Travelers — Special Requirements
Indian nationals cannot use the standard group visa process for Tibet. Indian travelers must apply through the Government of India's Kailash Mansarovar Yatra (KMY) program (KMVN/MEA) or the designated overland route. Please contact us directly before booking.
⚠ Altitude Risk — Mandatory Insurance Requirement
Travel insurance with emergency high-altitude medical evacuation coverage (minimum USD 100,000) is mandatory on this tour. This is not optional. PubMed research confirms AMS affects ~51% of trekkers at 4,500–5,000 m. Your guide carries emergency oxygen and is trained in altitude sickness protocol.
✔ Pricing Transparency
All prices (USD 1,700/person) apply to group-joining departures on twin-sharing basis. Single supplement applies for solo occupancy. Prices are honored at the quoted rate for confirmed bookings. Annapurna Encounter Pvt. Ltd. has operated since 2014, registered with NTB, TAAN, NMA, and PATA.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I book as a solo traveler?
Yes. This is a group-joining tour with guaranteed fixed departures. Solo travelers join a small group (typically 4–12 people). No minimum group size applies to individual bookings.
Q: Is the Kailash Kora safe without prior trekking experience?
Yes, for most healthy adults. The Kora is a well-defined pilgrimage trail used by people of all ages. The primary challenge is altitude, not terrain. Your licensed Tibetan guide monitors your health throughout and adjusts pace as needed.
Q: What happens if I develop altitude sickness?
Your Tibetan guide is trained in AMS recognition and carries emergency oxygen. If symptoms are severe, descent and evacuation is arranged immediately. This is why comprehensive travel insurance with high-altitude medical evacuation coverage is mandatory for all participants.
Q: Can I hire a porter or yak for the Kailash Kora?
Yes. Local porters and yaks are available at Darchen (approximately USD 20–30/day). This is not included in the package price but can be arranged in advance through our office or on arrival.
Q: What currency should I carry in Tibet?
Chinese Yuan (CNY / RMB) is the only accepted currency in Tibet. USD is not accepted at most guesthouses or shops on the plateau. Exchange currency before crossing the border or carry sufficient CNY from Kathmandu. ATMs are available at Kyirung but not reliably along the plateau route.
Q: What is the Saga Dawa Festival?
Saga Dawa is the holiest month in the Tibetan Buddhist calendar, commemorating the birth, enlightenment, and parinirvana of the Buddha. The full moon day (usually May–June) sees the largest annual pilgrimage gathering at Kailash. Completing the Kora during Saga Dawa is traditionally believed to multiply its spiritual merit 13-fold.
Q: Will the tour run if Tibet closes to foreign visitors?
If Tibet is officially closed and permits cannot be obtained, Annapurna Encounter issues a full refund. We monitor Tibet Tourism Bureau communications closely and inform all confirmed bookings as soon as restrictions are announced. We do not retain deposits for government-imposed closures.
