How Much Does the Manaslu Circuit Trek Cost in 2026? (Full Price Breakdown)

- annapurnaencounter

The Manaslu Circuit is the trek Nepal insiders recommend when someone asks for “the Annapurna Circuit twenty years ago” — raw, spectacular, and still wonderfully quiet. But because it sits inside a restricted area with its own permit rules, working out what it actually costs confuses almost everyone planning it. Quotes online range from under a thousand dollars to nearly three thousand, and it’s rarely clear what’s included.

Table of Contents

As a Kathmandu-based operator that runs private Manaslu departures, here is the honest, line-by-line breakdown of what you’ll pay in 2026 — and where the differences between cheap and expensive quotes really come from.

The short answer

For a standard 12-day Manaslu Circuit Trek in 2026, expect to pay roughly US$1,100–1,800 per person for a fully organised private trek with a licensed guide, permits, accommodation, meals, and ground transport. Budget-minded trekkers who pay for food and lodging themselves can bring the on-trail cost down somewhat, while upgraded services (private jeep both ways, single rooms, porter per person) push toward the upper end.

What you cannot do on Manaslu is trek independently to save money. Unlike Annapurna or Everest, the Manaslu region is a restricted area: a licensed guide and a minimum of two trekkers are legally required, and permits are only issued through a registered Nepali trekking agency. That single rule shapes the entire cost structure — so let’s break it down.

1. Permits: US$120–200 per person

Manaslu requires more paperwork than any of Nepal’s mainstream treks. You’ll need four documents, all arranged by your agency:

Permit

Sep–Nov (peak)

Dec–Aug

Manaslu Restricted Area Permit (RAP)

~US$100 first week + US$15/extra day

~US$75 first week + US$10/extra day

Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP)

~NPR 3,000 (~US$23)

Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)*

~NPR 3,000 (~US$23)

same

*ACAP is needed because the circuit exits through the Annapurna region after the Larkya La pass.

Realistically, budget about US$150–200 in autumn and slightly less off-season. Note that restricted-area fees are set by the government and do change — we confirm the current rates with every booking.

2. Guide and porter: US$300–500 for the trek

A licensed guide is mandatory, not optional. In 2026, a good English-speaking trekking guide costs US$30–40 per day, and a porter (carrying up to ~20kg for two trekkers) US$22–28 per day. Over a 12-day itinerary, that’s roughly US$360–480 for the guide and US$260–340 for a shared porter — split between the group on a private trek.

This is also where cheap quotes cut corners: an underpaid, uninsured guide is a safety risk on a trek that crosses a 5,106m pass. Any reputable operator includes the guide’s wages, insurance, food, and lodging in the price — ask directly if a quote seems too good.

3. Transport: US$50–250 depending on comfort

The trailhead at Machha Khola is a long drive from Kathmandu, and the trek ends at Dharapani/Besisahar on the Annapurna side.

  • Local/shared bus and jeep: US$50–80 total — slow and rough but cheap

  • Private jeep both ways: US$200–250 per vehicle (split between your group) — what we recommend and use for our private departures; the road is one of Nepal’s bumpiest and a private vehicle makes a genuine difference on day one and the last day

4. Food and accommodation: US$30–45 per day

Manaslu is a teahouse trek, so you sleep and eat in local lodges. Rooms are simple — typically US$5–10 a night — but as everywhere in the Himalaya, lodge owners expect you to eat where you sleep, and food carries the real cost. Expect dal bhat, noodles, momos, and pasta at US$6–9 per meal, rising with altitude since everything is carried in by mule or porter.

Budget US$30–45 per person per day for three meals, a room, and tea. Over 12 days that’s roughly US$360–540 — included in a full-board package like ours, paid out-of-pocket on a “services only” arrangement.

Add a small daily margin for extras the package never covers: hot showers (US$3–5), device charging (US$2–4), Wi-Fi where it exists, beer or soft drinks, and snacks.

5. The costs people forget

  • Travel insurance with helicopter evacuation cover up to 5,500m — non-negotiable for Larkya La. US$100–180 for a typical policy covering the trip.

  • Tips — customary in Nepal: roughly 10% of the trip cost split across your crew, or about US$80–120 total per trekker for guide and porter on a 12-day trek.

  • Gear — if you need to buy or rent down jackets, sleeping bags, or microspikes (often needed on the pass), Thamel rents quality gear for US$1–3 per item per day.

  • Kathmandu nights — a hotel night or two before and after the trek, US$25–80/night depending on taste.

The honest takeaway: by the time you’ve paid the mandatory permits, the mandatory guide, transport, and twelve days of meals, the “do it cheap” route saves less than most people expect — and adds all the organisational burden of restricted-area paperwork, jeep haggling, and lodge availability in peak season. That’s why most trekkers choose a complete package and spend their energy on the mountain instead.

Why prices vary so much between companies

Three things explain the gap between a US$900 quote and a US$2,500 one:

  1. What’s actually included. Some quotes exclude permits, meals, or the return transport. Always compare the inclusion lists, not the headline number.

  2. Staff welfare. Insurance, fair wages, and proper equipment for guides and porters cost real money. Companies that skip them are cheaper — and you carry the ethical and safety consequences.

  3. Group vs private. Big-group departures look cheap per head but lock you to fixed dates and someone else’s pace. A private trek costs a little more and gives you complete flexibility — and on a restricted route where your permit is tied to your itinerary, flexibility matters.

Is the Manaslu Circuit worth the cost?

In our view — and our clients’ — yes, emphatically. For a similar budget to the busier Annapurna Circuit with teahouse upgrades, you get a wilder trail, authentic Tibetan-Buddhist villages like Lho and Samagaun, close-up views of the world’s eighth-highest mountain, and a fraction of the foot traffic. The Larkya La crossing is one of the most dramatic pass days in Nepal.

FAQs

Can I trek the Manaslu Circuit without a guide?

No. The restricted-area rules require a licensed guide and a minimum group of two trekkers, with permits issued only through a registered agency. Solo trekkers can usually be paired or arranged for — contact us and we’ll advise.

How many days do I need?

Twelve days is the standard itinerary with proper acclimatisation before Larkya La. Add 2–4 days if you want the stunning Tsum Valley side trip.

When is the best time to go?

October–November and March–May offer the most stable weather. September and early December are quieter shoulder options. The monsoon months are not recommended on this route.

How much cash should I carry?

There are no ATMs after Soti Khola/Machha Khola. Carry enough Nepali rupees for your personal extras for the whole trek — most trekkers take NPR 20,000–30,000.

Is Manaslu more expensive than the Annapurna Circuit?

Slightly, because of the restricted-area permit and mandatory guide. The difference is typically US$200–350 — modest, for a far quieter trail.

Planning Manaslu for autumn 2026?

October dates fill first — lodges in Samagaun and Samdo are limited and restricted-area permits are tied to your itinerary. Get a personalised quote for your private Manaslu Circuit Trek →
