Overview And Highlights
TRIP FACTS

May is perhaps the ideal period for trekking in Upper Mustang, a region that remained inaccessible to foreigners until 1992. Isolated from the rest of the world for many centuries, it is one of the last unspoiled representations of Tibetan culture and is often referred to as "The Last Forbidden Kingdom."Towards the conclusion of the dry season, there is an age-old three-day celebration held annually within the fortified city of Lo Manthang. This event narrates the tale of Dorje Jono, a deity who had to combat his father to protect the Kingdom of Mustang from devastation. Dorje's father deliberately caused a water shortage that created chaos in the area.
Due to its proximity to the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri Massif region, water is an extremely precious resource in Mustang.Dorje emerged victorious in the battle against his father, banishing him from the land. This celebration, known as the Tiji festival, symbolizes and reconfirms this legend through dances and religious ceremonies. The first Westerner to witness the Tiji festival was Michel Peissel in 1964. He described it in the following way: "The scenes I observed were so exceptional and unforeseen that I hesitated to trust my eyes. Even today, I find it challenging to accept the reality of what I witnessed on that day."
The festival's date is determined by the Tibetan calendar and changes every year, but it generally falls in May. Participating in the Tiji festival feels like stepping back in time. You become fully immersed in the sights and sounds of rituals that burst forth with vivid colors and extraordinary sounds during this exceptional and remarkable festival that depicts the struggle between good and evil.
