Overview And Highlights
TRIP FACTS
"In the embrace of Barun Valley's wilderness, we find not only the beauty of nature but the beauty within ourselves."
The Barun Valley Trek is a journey through breathtaking landscapes that will leave you in awe. You'll encounter cascading waterfalls, deep gorges, lush greenery, and rocky terrain as you ascend to higher altitudes. This 46km-long valley sits at the base of Mount Makalu, the world's fifth-highest peak.
This entire region falls within the boundaries of the Makalu Barun National Park, a protected area covering 1500 square kilometers in eastern Nepal. It extends from subtropical terrain near the Arun River to the Tibetan plateau. The Barun River, known as Chukchuwa by the indigenous Limbu people, flows through the valley and transforms into a glacier during winter.
Mount Makalu, located 19 kilometers southeast of Mount Everest in the Mahalangur Himalayas, is a remarkable four-sided pyramid-shaped peak, flanked by equally impressive secondary peaks. This region is split between the SoluKhumbu and Sankhuwasavha districts and is under protection.
Throughout the trek, you'll have clear views of the snow-capped peaks of Mount Makalu (8463m), Mount Chamlang (7319m), and Mount Baruntse (7129m). The Makalu Barun area is teeming with unique flora and fauna, including vibrant Rhododendron trees with pink blossoms, wild orchids, and elusive creatures like the snow leopard, red panda, musk deer, yak, and Himalayan Thar. More than 420 bird species, some exclusive to Nepal, also call this area home.
The Barun Valley trek commences at Tumlingtar and winds through various villages along the Barun River Valley. Along the way, you'll traverse high-altitude passes like Shipton La Pass (4220m), Keke La Pass (4150m), and reach the enchanting Kalipokhri Lake. The pinnacle of this trek is Makalu Base Camp at 5000 meters above sea level.
